The Sandwich High girls’ lacrosse team (5-2, 5-0 ACL) got off to a 3-0 start Tuesday on goals by Miranda Fernald, Elise Kinchla and Shalynn Doherty, but then the Lady Knights let down their guard and Barnstable took full advantage scoring three times in the span of just over a minute to knot the game at 3-all. By the break SHS was playing better and once the second half started they looked more like the team they are capable of being, as they rocked the Red Raiders claiming a 20-10 win.

Colleen Carroll put the Lady Knights back on top with 14:57 to play in the opening half as she bounced a shot past BHS goalie Ali Shopshire. Doherty and Kinchla then tacked on goals with Doherty, making it a hat trick at the 8:17 mark as she drilled the ball into the back of the net off a restart to the right side.

Barnstable got one back, but Ashley Holmes answered 51 seconds later, beating Shopshire on a crossing route in front. Jen Rae made it a 9-4 game with 27 seconds left, but the Red Raiders managed one more before the whistle as the Lady Knights took a 9-5 advantage into the break.

Before Barnstable knew what hit them, Caroline Wall put the Knights up 12-5 with three goals in the opening 1:36 of the second half. Five minutes later the Red Raiders broke through, scoring three times and cutting the Sandwich lead to 12-8. But Wall cut the celebration short when she hammered home a high overhand shot for the 13th SHS goal.

Again the Red Raiders tried to come back, but before they could get anything going, the Lady Knights ganged up on Shopshire with Doherty landing her fourth, Grace Davis hit from in front off a nice pass from Wall and then Rae teamed up with Davis for a 16-9 lead. Just 17 seconds after Rae’s goal Fernald ripped off a shot off a pass from Doherty that buzzed past Shopshire. Wall topped off the Sandwich scoring surge with the fifth in a five-minute period and her fifth of the game to give the Lady Knights an 18-9 lead.

Barnstable got their last with 6:57 to play. India Ellis and Kinchla topped off the scoring for SHS in the final two minutes.
Katie Corey played a solid defensive game, twice driving the Red Raiders back in the second half. Michael Igo and Carroll were also strong on defense.

Wall led the scoring with five goals and two assists. Doherty and Kinchla each had four goals and an assist. Rae had two goals and two assists, and Davis finished with a goal and an assist.

Sandwich outshot Barnstable 27-14 with Chelsea Gibbs getting the win in goal for the Lady Knights.
Wall led the Lady Knights Friday in their 14-1 victory over Plymouth South. The junior attack-wing recorded four goals. Doherty and Rae each had two markers, while Carroll, Davis, Ellis, Kinchla, Erin Gendreau, and Sam Finerty each recorded one.
