Although meteorological winter doesn’t start for another couple of weeks, the high school winter sports season will begin next week as the Barnstable High boys’ and girls’ basketball teams tip off their 2010-11 campaigns next Friday.
The BHS boys will open they hoop season on the road against the Sandwich Blue Knights while the BHS girls will open their new season at home against the Harwich Rough Riders.
Three other groups of Red Raiders, the boys’ and girls’ hockey teams and the wrestling team, will open their 2010 seasons on Saturday, December 11.
The wrestling team will open the day when they host Bristol-Plymouth and Hanover for a three-team meet at the BHS field house. The boys’ hockey team will be skating on home ice when they welcome the Sandwich Blue Knights to the Hyannis Youth & Community Center while the girls’ hockey team will be hitting the road to take on Duxbury.
Actually, the first BHS winter sports squads to see action will be the Red Raider boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams, which will participate in the annual relays at Wheaton College on Tuesday. The relays are a warm-up for their dual meet season opener, which is scheduled for Tuesday, December 14, when Red Raiders travel to take on Old Colony League rival Dartmouth.
The Red Raider boys’ and girls’ swimming teams will get wet for the first time on Sunday, December 12, when they take part in the Bay Colony relay meet at Sandwich. The BHS swimming team will be back at the Sandwich pool on Saturday, December 18, to take on the Blue Knights in their first regular season meet while the BHS girls will have to wait until Monday, December 20, to see their first regular season action, traveling to meet Bridgewater-Raynham.
In 2009, the then three-time defending state champion BHS gymnastics team had to wait until the end of December to begin regular season action but that is not the case this winter season as the now four-time defending state champions hit the floor for the first time on December 14 when the Red Raiders take on Marshfield in an away meet.
