With the memory of missing the state tournament by a single point in the back of their minds, the Blue Knights will take the ice this winter focused on not allowing that to happen again.

“We’ll compete for the Atlantic Coast League title and we’ll get back to the tournament,” Coach Jordan Mohre said. “Missing it by just one point last year hurt. It was a tough lesson for the kids that every game, every minute out there, every point counts.”

Sandwich will be led by senior captain Steve Lessard. A veteran of four years in the program, Lessard will skate at center ice.

“We’re looking for continued leadership from Steve,” the coach said. “He’s respected in the locker room and will log a ton of ice time. We’ll be looking to him for his offensive ability and defensive responsibility.”

Joining Lessard will be three senior assistant captains.

Pat Farrington is a veteran of four years at the varsity level and has been outstanding for the Knights in goal.

“Pat is an exceptional goalie and anyone involved in the program can’t forget his freshman year,” Mohre noted. “Pat garners a lot of respect and could prove to be the backbone of our team.”

C.J. Dolan, another veteran of four seasons in the program, will also be an assistant captain. Dolan will skate at center ice.

“C.J. is all heart and hustle,” Mohre pointed out. “To go along with his ability on the ice, he’s a great student and a real lead-by-example sort of guy.”

The third assistant captain will be Tom Colombo, who will skate on the wing.“He’s a hustler out there,” the coach said of Columbo. “He’ll do whatever you ask. Tom is another exceptional student and gives us a lot of flexibility up front or on defense.”

Sandwich has a group of 14 seniors this season. Dom Lasorsa, Dan Branzetti, Zach Mangelson, Tom MacDonald, and Pat Long will skate on defense. Long can also play up front.Alex LaRocco will skate on the wing and Jake McCombs will play center.

Two juniors back this winter who are expected to have an impact are Joe Robertson and Sam Sholi, both wingers. Sophomores Drew Buckland and Joe Tyo should also see plenty of ice time.

“We have a big senior class, so leadership should not be a problem,” Mohre pointed out. “I have high expectations.”

Sandwich opens the season tomorrow against Barnstable at 7 PM at the Hyannis Community Center.

“Any team coached by Scott Nickerson you expect to be good,” Coach Mohre added. “We had a good scrimmage against Bishop Stang and I saw some good things, and some things we have to work on.”

Coach Mohre is assisted again this year by junior varsity coach and varsity assistant Gil Bach. The Knights will play their home-opener Wednesday at John Gallo Ice Arena, when they will face Plymouth South at 8 PM.
