Four, big free throws by Jimmy Halliday in the final 27 seconds Tuesday night sealed the win for the Canalmen as Bourne improved to 2-0 for the season with a 58-56 victory on the road at Fairhaven.
Bourne pushed ahead to a 16-7 lead by the end of the opening quarter and held a 24-17 advantage by halftime.
“We went down by five points with 2:27 to play in the third,” Coach Scott Ashworth said, “but we came back to tie it with four minutes left to play in the fourth.”
The Canalmen got outstanding defense from John Page.
“He had some nice blocks,” the coach noted, “and was matched up with their two best players all night.”
Erik Smith had some nice baskets late in the fourth quarter, and Jack Canterbury and Brendan Andrade were strong defensively down the stretch.
Cody Sloniecki led the scoring for BHS with 24 points. Halliday added 16 and Blade Levenworth had eight points and two three-pointers.
“We fought through some adversity,” the coach added, “but the guys did a good job.”
The Canalmen return to the court tonight at 6:30 PM when they will host Case.
