Sandwich Swimmers Sink Bishop Stang & Sacred Heart

Sandwich (4-0) won all but one event Wednesday as the boys’ swimming and diving team sunk Sacred Heart, 90-55.
The Knights took the opening relay with Brian Hann, Christian Hassler, Beau Stanton, and Mo Sykes swimming a winning time of 2:01.59 in the medley relay. Tom Cundiff (1:57.87) led a Sandwich sweep of the 200 freestyle with Alex Simpson (2:03.69) second and Mike Deptula (2:19.72) third.
Nick Crossman (2:13.19) took first in the individual medley followed by Trey Kamb (2:23.78) in second. Sykes (25.70) swam second in the 50 freestyle and Sam Scott (195.90) won the diving.
Stanton (1:03.54) took first in the butterfly and Sykes picked up another win with first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:00.17.
Simpson (5:23.93) led a Sandwich sweep in the 500 freestyle, followed by Keller Comer (5:52.65) in second and Tristan Ferris (6:38.59) in third.
The relay team of Cundiff, Hann, Simpson, and Deptula won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.26 and Kamb was a winner in the backstroke at 1:02.50. Crossman (1:12.24) took the top spot in the breaststroke and the team of Cundiff, Simpson, Kamb, and Crossman won the 400 freestyle relay.
According to Sandwich Coach Tony Compton, the last time the Blue Knights beat Bishop Stang was in 2002. Monday afternoon the Knights set their sights on winning and for the first time in nine years knocked off the Spartans with a 99-84 win.
It was an afternoon of personal bests for Sandwich, starting right out of the gate, as the team of Kamb, Crossman, Cundiff, and Simpson won the medley relay with a team best mark of 1:51.98.
Simpson was right back in the water for the 200 freestyle, finishing second with a personal best swim of 1:58.01.
Crossman won the individual medley, posting a personal best time of 2:15.41, and Sandwich claimed first and third in the 50 freestyle with Cundiff winning with a personal best time of 24.08 and Stanton taking third with a personal best of 25.67. Going into the diving, the Knights held a 34-28 lead.
Sandwich captured the top two spots in the diving competition with Scott collecting 182.50 points and Grady Bergin finishing second with 175.25. Both SHS divers have already qualified for the state meet.
Following the diving, Cundiff won the butterfly with a state qualifying time of 59.82 and Stanton swam third with a personal best of 1:04.46.
The Knights took second through fourth in the 100 freestyle, led by Kamb with a personal best of 55.84. Sykes swam a personal best 58.71 for third and Deptula was fourth with a personal best mark of 59.49. None of the three Sandwich swimmers had posted prior times below one minute in the event.
Simpson swam a state qualifying time of 5:18.88 to win the 500 freestyle as the Knights pulled ahead, 74-51. The team of Hann, Stanton, Sykes, and Comer took second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.13 and Kamb won the backstroke with a personal best time of 1:04.21. Crossman gave Sandwich another first as he touched first in the breaststroke in 1:10.89.
The Knights did not take points in the final event. However, the SHS team of Kamb, Cundiff, Simpson, and Crossman won the relay in 3:45.15.
