The Lady Canalmen closed to within a point, with 50 seconds to go in the third quarter Wednesday night, but could not hold on as they fell to Old Rochester 51-36.
“We played well,” Coach Mike Tierney said. “We’re still growing, we still don’t have a lot of scoring depth, but we give up fewer points per game than any other team in the conference.”
Bourne trailed the Bulldogs 23-16 at halftime, before mounting their third-quarter comeback.
“Our bench is starting to play well,” the coach added. “Mackenzie Hydlburg and Allie Stone played good games.”
Brie Girouard led the scoring for the Lady Canalmen with nine points, to which she added nine rebounds. Shelby Corsano had eight points.
“Whoever we play Lindsay Rice always guards the other team’s best player,” Tierney pointed out. “Lindsay is probably one of the best defensive players in the conference.”
Case hit two three-pointers to open the game Sunday afternoon. Two jump shots from Lindsay Rice and a lay-up by Alison O’Kane tied the score. Brie Girouard then dished off to O’Kane, going to the hoop and giving Bourne the lead, and the Lady Canalmen never looked back as they cruised to a 44-37 victory over Case.
Rice and Girouard came up big off the glass in the first half for Bourne, but it was the quickness of O’Kane and Shelby Corsano that gave the Cardinals fits as they help force 17 turnovers in the opening 16 minutes.
Taking a 22-15 lead into the third quarter, O’Kane turned another Case turnover into two points. Chelsea Doucette and Corsano hit from the floor, and O’Kane took a steal by Girouard and put it in, capping an 8-2 BHS run.
The Lady Canalmen then combined on a couple of nice offensive plays with O’Kane feeding Girouard underneath and then stealing the ball and pushing it ahead to Doucette for a lay-up.
Mackenzie Hyldburg hit a jumper off a pass from O’Kane to open the fourth quarter. Case then went on a 10-2 scoring run, but couldn’t catch Bourne.
O’Kane led all scorers with 11 points. Rice add 10 points and six rebounds. Doucette finished with nine points, and Girouard had eight points and 11 rebounds.
