Happy birthday, Coach Scott Ashworth. Tuesday night the Bourne boys’ basketball team gave their coach a special present. Not only did the team stage an exciting 53-44 come-from-behind win over Greater New Bedford Voke Tech, with the win they also put BHS (10-6) into the state tournament.
After a low-scoring first quarter, GNBVT edged ahead in the second to take a 22-17 edge at halftime. Coming out of the locker room in the third quarter, the Bears poured it on, sparked by a three-point shot from senior guard Ian Power, GNBVT pulled out to an 11-point lead. With 4:39 left in the quarter, Jack Canterbury dished to John Page underneath the hoop for two points, launching a 13-2 BHS scoring run. Cody Sloniecki then drove to the net and Page hit a jumper.
After allowing the Bears to control the defensive boards, the Canalmen banged around underneath in the second half with Sloniecki and Drew Girouard doing a nice job.
Page, Girouard, and Canterbury pushed hard down the stretch with Girouard landing the game-tying shot to end the third at 35-all.
Bourne continued to control the tempo in the fourth as Mike McMahon, Page, and Jimmy Halliday put up the points. A steal by Halliday that he took the length of the court for a lay-up drawing a foul resulted in a three-point play. GNBVT got the ball back and Page took it away racing the length of the court, dropping in two more points for Bourne.
Great team basketball and an aggressive press that forced seven GNBVT turnovers in the final eight minutes frustrated the Bears attempt to catch BHS.
Halliday led the scoring with 15 points, including a three-pointer. He also had four rebounds with three coming in the fourth. Page, whose lay-up sparked the bounce back by Bourne, finished with 13 points. Girouard had 12 points and six rebounds. The Canalmen shot 12-for-27 from the line.
Bourne picked up a 66-30 victory over Pope John Paul II Friday night. Blade Levenworth, Page, and Greg Roche each finished the night with nine points. Roche got his all on three-point shots. Bourne had 13 players involved in the scoring.
