Sandwich (2-0-1) put up a half dozen goals Wednesday as they opened Atlantic Coast League play with a 6-0 field hockey victory over Marshfield.
The Blue Knights spread the scoring around. Led by senior Claire Gauthier with two tallies, Sandwich also had goals from Katie Payne, Ally Hir and Amy Ford. Zoe Clarkin joined the scoring, registering her first varsity goal.
Senior captain Katie Payne’s diving effort with 14:51 to play in the second half saved the Blue Knights from their first loss of the season on Monday, as they settled for a 1-1 tie with visiting Duxbury.
Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, the Knights fought for shooting opportunities, coming up empty after four corners. A fifth corner yielded a shot on goal, but Duxbury goalie Maggie Connelly kicked the ball aside. With 15 minutes to play Nicole Martin took Sandwich’s sixth corner of the half. A scramble at the top of the circle ensued with Claire Gauthier coming up with the ball. With the Duxbury defense bunched up in front of the goal, Gauthier executed a perfect pass through the tangle of players to Martin, who managed to feed the ball to Payne at the right post. Connelly saw the move and made a dive for the post, but Payne was quicker, going head first for the ball and getting her stick on it a fraction of a second before Connelly landed across the mouth of the goal tying the game.
Duxbury was first on the scoreboard Monday taking a 1-0 lead with two minutes left in the opening half on a goal by Lily Smith.
The Green Dragons tested the Blue Knight defense early in the game, but were turned back by nice defensive play by Madeline Klimm. Seven minutes into the game Maggie Layo crashed through the Duxbury defense and managed a shot on Connelly, and then four minutes later unloaded a blast at Connelly that was deflected.
At the other end of the field Sandwich goalie Anna Hurley made a nice kick save on a Duxbury corner and then held off the Green Dragons, who managed two shots on goal in a scramble with four minutes remaining in the half.
The Knights fought to make something of their corner opportunities early in the second half as Layo, Payne, Mallory Whelan and Nicole Martin pressured the Duxbury goal. Gauthier and Klimm were strong in the Blue Knight midfield and Rachel Pentoney and Abby Cameron did a nice job defensively.
