Sandwich Field Hockey Wins State Tournament Opening Round

Sandwich scored once in each half as they opened the MIAA Division1 South Sectional state tournament with a 2-0 first round victory over visiting 10th seeded Mansfield (13-5-1).
The seventh seeded Lady Knights (16-2-3) move on to face the winner of Friday's game between second seeded Walpole (17-0-1) and 15th seeded Westwood (9-4-5) in quarterfinal action on Sunday.
Mansfield matched one of Sandwich’s big weapons with players that could blast the ball just as hard as Maggie Layo and Madeline Klimm. For most of the opening half the two teams went up and down the field with the defense at either end spoiling almost every opportunity. The Lady Knights had five early corner shots, but couldn’t muster a shot. Klimm and Kate Towey spoiled a couple of chances by the Hornets as each team managed just two shots on goal in the opening 30 minute period. It wasn’t until with 1:47 left in the half that the Knights broke through. Layo took a shot that rode wide to the right side, but not so mach that Ally Hir couldn't get a stick on it and put it past Mansfield goalie Crysta-Lyn Pepicelli.
Sandwich carried the late goal momentum into the second half and needed just 2:50 before they were on the scoreboard again. This time it was Layo slamming a corner shot from Nicole Martin into the back of the goal.
The Lady Knights weren’t about to sit on their two-goal lead as Layo and Martin were back in front of the Mansfield goal about a minute later pounding away forcing Pepicelli to make another save. Mallory Whelan got off a shot on goal as did Katie Payne, but Pepicelli was there for the save.
Morgan Rich and Rachel Pentoney played solid defense for Sandwich, while up front Martin, Layo Whelan and Hir gave the Hornets all they could handle.
