Sandwich Soccer Slams Visiting Wellfleet
By: DAN CROWLEY, June 13, 2014
The Sandwich Knights of the Cape Cod Amateur Soccer League opened the summer season Wednesday, June 11, at Sandwich High School with a convincing 9-0 victory over Wellfleet.
The Knights dominated the match. It took Sandwich striker Peter Alverenga just 16 minutes to score his first goal of the season on a run up the middle, move to his right and then a blast that buried itself in the back of the Wellfleet net. Alvarenga finished the night with four goals.
In the 25th minute, JD Drumm put the Knights up 2-0 off a feed from Connor O’Brien. Drumm closed in on a bouncing ball just outside the box and hit the ball in the air, driving it past the Wellfleet keeper.
The Knights continued to roll as the offensive pressure had Wellfleet back on their heels. The Sandwich midfield of Alverenga, Conor Fitzgerald, O’Brien, Kevin Greene and Ben Clabault spoiled most Wellfleet attempts to clear their defensive zone. Peter Alverenga hit his second goal of the night in the 27th minute off a cross from Fitzgerald. A minute later Alvarenga gave the Knights a 4-0 lead with his third goal, as he took quick advantage of a misplayed ball by the Wellfleet defense and tucked it inside the far post.
Greene gave the Knights a 5-0 lead just before the break as he took a ball from Nick Cotter and, moving from left to right, beat the Wellfleet keeper in the 42nd minute.
Five minutes into the second half O’Brien put the Knights up 6-0 with a blast from the top of the box. Peter Alverenga then collected his fourth of the match 22 minutes into the second half when he took a ball from Ethan Bates and slipped it just under the top crossbar. Greene registered his second of the night 27 minutes into the second when he drilled a shot from the right side that hit inside the far post. Todd Shigo rounded out the scoring 38 minutes into the half off a cross from left to right by Cotter, whose pass hit Shigo on the foot and he took care of the rest.
The few times Wellfleet managed to get past the stubborn Sandwich midfield, they ran into a solid backfield led by Jake Hyland and Steve Scanlon. Jason Katz picked up the win in net for the Knights.
The Sandwich Knights will be sporting new jerseys and shorts this season thanks to the sponsorship of Richard H. Sadowski DMD.
