The Lady Knight softball team ended the regular season with a 17-4 victory over Nauset (5-15) in the consolation round of the Cape Cod Showdown on May 22. Sandwich finished the season with a record of 8-10, just missing a spot in the state tournament.
Sophomore Caitlyn Murphy came up from the JV for the last week of the season and got her first varsity start against the Warriors. She went the distance, allowing four runs on five hits. She struck out five.
“Caitlyn threw a stellar game to pick up her first varsity win,” coach Bob Sullivan said.
The Warriors took an early 4-0 lead, but in the bottom off the third, Sandwich pounded Nauset, scoring 10 times.
“Julianna Ferguson led off the inning with a solo home run,” coach Sullivan said. “Kerry Kelley was up next and she also hit a home run.”
A walk to Kasey Noonan, who stole second, turned into another SHS run when Kelley Fitzgerald then hit a hard single to centerfield. Walks to Courtney Ladner and Freshman Kat Garbacik loaded the bases. Kylie Condosta then drew a walk, scoring Fitzgerald to tie the game. Savannah Reynolds walked, scoring the go-ahead run and Kerry Kelly slammed a triple driving in three more for a 8-4 Sandwich lead.
“Kasey Noonan then singled home Kerry Kelley, making in 9-4,” the coach said. “Noonan then stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch, making 10-4.”
Another big inning followed with seven more Sandwich runs crossing the plate in the fourth inning.
“Fitzgerald started off the inning with a line drive single to left field,” Sullivan said. “Helen Colwell then walked and Ladner was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Junior Katelyn Govoni pinch hit and reached first on a dropped third strike, making it 11-4. Freshman Liz Lorino then singled, scoring two runs. Ferguson hit a line drive double to left center, scoring two more and Kelley doubled, scoring Ferguson. Kelley then stole third and scored on a passed ball.”
