FHS Gio Borgese

Giovanni Borgese created this watercolor in response to the Transcendartists Project created by Falmouth High School educators Lauren Kenny and Jane Baker.

Falmouth High School educators Lauren Kenny and Jane Baker were recognized for their efforts in this year’s State Energy Secretary’s Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education.

The program recognizes educators who have been nominated by a parent, colleague, student, school administrator or community member for their excellence in providing energy and environmental education to their students.

Ms. Kenny and Ms. Baker were acknowledged for their collaborative 2019 Transcendartists Project, which consisted of a series of assignments which asked students to reflect on the work of Transcendentalist writers such as Henry David Thoreau and Walt Whitman, while incorporating visits to conservation lands, meditation studies and frequent journal entries in words and sketches. The journals then acted as source material for a series of artworks and poetry by the students with the end result being a published book of broadsides. The project was initially funded by the Falmouth Education Foundation.
