The Woods Hole Jazz All-Star Quartet will perform in the Woods Hole Community Hall on Tuesday, June 11, at 7:30 PM. The concert is a reunion of one of the first all-star ensembles in the 40-year history of the series.
The quartet includes Stan Strickland on vocals, saxophone and flute; Frank Wilkins on piano; Frank Tate on bass; and Royal Hartigan on percussion.
Mr. Strickland has performed with the Boston Pops, Herbie Mann, Marlena Shaw, Pharaoh Sanders, Danilo Perez and Yusef Lateef, among others. He also co-wrote “Coming Up for Air,” a one-man autobiographical play. He is an associate professor of voice at the Berklee College of Music.
Pianist Frank Wilkins has performed with jazz luminaries Tyron Davis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kevin Eubanks and Lavern Baker. Mr. Wilkins appears frequently in Woods Hole.
Bassist Frank Tate has also been a frequent Woods Hole performer, most recently with pianist Rossano Sportielo. Over his four-decade career Mr. Tate has performed with well-known jazz artists Benny Goodman, Marian McPartland, Zoot Sims, Harry Allen, Joe Venuti, Pearl Bailey and the Ruby Braf trio.
Cape Cod jazz fans may recall that Mr. Tate performed as part of the house band with legendary pianist Dave McKenna at the Columns Club in Dennis.
Royal Hartigan has received many travel grants and teaching awards for his study of drumming and percussion in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. He currently teaches world music and music theory at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at WoodsHoleJazz.org, or in person at Eight Cousins Books on Main Street in Falmouth and Under the Sun in Woods Hole.
