A bit of Las Vegas touched down in Hyannis last week when “An Evening With The Stars” featuring the Edwards twins played three performances at the Double Tree Inn. For those who missed it, the brothers will be performing this Saturday at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth.
The identical twin brothers presented a high-energy show in which they impersonated a range of celebrities from Celine Dion and Frankie Valli to Kermit the Frog, performing an almost non-stop string of musical numbers.
“Every show is different, depending on how the audience reacts,” Anthony Edwards said during a point in the show when he came out as himself and talked briefly about how the two brothers got their start. Mr. Edwards then donned a variety of wigs and sunglasses, transforming himself from Elvis to Ray Charles.
Mr. Edwards also emphasized that the brothers are not lip-synching, but actually singing in the voices and ranges of all the different performers.
What began as two young brothers at their California home mimicking skits from “The Sonny and Cher Show,” and “Laugh-In” has morphed into a 35-year career for the brothers, who were encouraged to pursue their passion for impersonations by Carol Burnett.
What might be most liberating at this show is that the audience is encouraged to clap, hoot, and holler and sing along—loudly. “The only thing not allowed is sitting quietly,” says the announcer at the beginning of the performance. While it’s obvious that the Edwards twins are talented musicians in their own right, there’s a lot less guilt in singing along with someone who’s impersonating Barbra Streisand than in belting out a song along with the pop diva herself. No one will shush you.
These are guys that you hope are on your flight if your plane is ever delayed for four hours at Logan. It would be like having a nightclub in your pocket, and no doubt they take requests.
The Edward twins perform both separately and together, with Eddie playing female performers (Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand and Cher) and Anthony tackling male performers including Frankie Valli, Andrea Bocelli, and Sonny Bono.
The brothers have impersonated more than 100 different celebrities. They do their own makeup, wigs, and costuming, all of which is extensive. Gestures and facial expressions, along with the vocals, add to the impersonations. They perform more than 250 shows per year around the country and the world, and have been seen on “The Tonight Show,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Today” and “Ellen.” They recently appeared on the “The Kominsky Method” with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.
While this is their 20th consecutive season of bringing their show to Cape Cod, Saturday's show will be their first-ever appearance at the Sea Crest.
Tickets for the show are $45 general admission, $65 for VIP seating. Tickets can be purchased at www.theedwardstwins.com, or call 844-214-7469. Showtime is 8 PM.
