Bourne Police brought a man back to safety on Friday, October 11, after he tried to jump off of Sagamore Bridge.

Officer Andrew Weddell was dispatched to the Sagamore Bridge to assist Massachusetts State Police with a pedestrian who was acting erratically and seemed distraught, according to a statement released from the Bourne Police Department.

Massachusetts State Police Trooper Jon O’Loughlin was attempting to calm him when Officer Weddell arrived.

The man grabbed onto the concrete side barrier and leaned over the side of the bridge, according to the statement. Officer Weddell and Trooper O’Loughlin gained control of the man before he went over the side of the bridge.

The man was brought to rescue personnel for evaluation.

The Bourne Police Department applauded “the quick thinking and fast response of Officer Weddell and Trooper O’Loughlin” in the statement.
