A car went up in flames in the parking lot of the State Police Barracks at the Bourne Bridge on Wednesday morning, April 28. The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, escaped without injury, Bourne fire officials said.

Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Richard W. Emberg said that firefighters responded to the fire just after 7 AM. Dep. Chief Emberg said the car was a dark-colored Nissan Altima. The driver told firefighters he was having mechanical and electrical problems with the car while going over the bridge just before it caught fire.

“He was sitting on the bridge and felt the power steering go out,” Dep. Chief Emberg said. “Then the radio went out, and he felt the car start to heat up, so he pulled into the driveway of the State Police Barracks, where it caught fire.”

The driver was not hurt but the car was a total loss, the deputy chief said.

The fire led to traffic delays in the area of the bridge and rotary, he said.
