An SUV caught on fire in the median of MacArthur Boulevard in Bourne, temporarily closing down the road Saturday afternoon, February 20, according to Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Ryan M. Haden.

Medics in a Bourne fire department ambulance returning from Falmouth Hospital came upon the vehicle fire at 2:45 PM. The small SUV was engulfed in flames when the crew stopped to help the driver who was already out of the vehicle. The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Tobey Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mr. Haden said.

Two engines were called to the scene just north of Clay Pond Road to extinguish the fire. It took crews an hour and a half to dampen the flames and wet the brush on the road side, he said. Northbound lanes were closed while they worked the fire.

State Police is investigating the crash.
