End Football At Bourne High

Bret Favre, Hall of Fame quarterback, has begun a campaign to expose the dangers of CTE—chronic traumatic encephalopathy—caused by repeated blows to the head while playing football. He has publicly stated that he will not encourage his grandsons to play football.

A 2015 film, “Concussion,” described the discovery of CTE when researchers investigated inexplicable deaths and suicides by former NFL players.

Aaron Hernandez, formerly of the New England Patriots, who committed suicide while in prison, was said to have had perhaps the most serious case of CTE seen to date.

The information we have today indicates convincingly that sports concussions can lead to personality changes, increased violence, depression, dementia and suicide.

It is time for responsible adults in Bourne to take a stand against high school football and encourage alternative sports. We should protect the young men of the community from injuries that they will suffer from for the rest of their lives.

Across the country there are a number of cases where parents of injured athletes are suing school departments, and NFL players continue to battle the NFL for compensation for their injuries.

I urge the Town of Bourne to end football at Bourne High School for the sake of the young men in Bourne.
