Massachusetts State Police said no one was seriously hurt and there were no fatalities in a five-vehicle crash that closed the Sagamore Bridge Tuesday morning, August 22.
Bourne police reported heavy traffic on Head of the Bay Road, Scenic Highway, Main Street in Buzzards Bay, Sandwich Road, Route 25, Route 6, Route 6A and MacArthur Boulevard due to the crash.
The multi-vehicle crash happened around 6:50 AM. Trooper Paul E. Sullivan, spokesman for the state police, said that a 2004 Jeep Liberty driven by a 42-year-old man from Brockton was going over the Sagamore Bridge from the mainland side to the Cape side. His car drifted over the solid yellow line in the middle of the road and collided with a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by a 59-year-old man, also from Brockton.
The Liberty proceeded to also collide with a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 56-year-old man from Dennis and a 2012 Toyota Tundra driven by a 19-year-old woman from Orleans. After hitting the Tundra, the Liberty rolled over and came to a stop at the base of the bridge, Trooper Sullivan said.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty was taken to Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Plymouth with non-incapacitating injuries. The driver of the Grand Cherokee was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, also with non-incapacitating injuries. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the Tundra were not hurt, and their vehicles were able to leave the scene without being towed. A fifth vehicle, a 2006 Nissan Xterra driven by a 34-year-old woman from Buzzards Bay, sustained damage to the hood and windshield. She was not hurt, and the car was not towed, Trooper Sullivan said.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty that initiated the crash was cited by state police for a marked lanes violation, Trooper Sullivan said.
