The Bourne Health Department announced that Picture Lake in Pocasset has been closed for swimming due to a suspected high bacteria count.

Bourne Health Agent Terri A. Guarino issued notice of the closure at the town’s website on Monday, August 12. Ms. Guarino said the closure will likely remain in effect for several days.

“After passing water quality reports are received which meet the MassDPH guidelines, this posting will be removed and the beach will be open for swimming and bathing,” she said.

Ms. Guarino also noted on Monday that a public health advisory had been posted at Monument Beach. The notice went up to inform the public of reported cases of Swimmer’s Itch from people who has bathed at the beach over the past several weeks.

Ms. Guarino pointed out in her notice that Monument Beach was not closed. She said there are “no specific guidelines in the State Sanitary Code for this.”

“This is an advisory notice so that people may make informed decisions and reduce risk,” she said.
