Tired of hearing from friends and family who were paying hundreds of dollars for new tires for their vehicles, a Mashpee man has opened a shop along the Cape Cod Canal that specializes in used tires.

Owner Isaac Hendricks celebrated the grand opening of Canal Used Tire on November 3 and said that he has seen steady business ever since.

The shop is inside the garage attached to the Shell gas station at 847 Sandwich Road in Sagamore, across from the rear entrance to the Christmas Tree Shops.

Mr. Hendricks sells used tires at about half the cost of new tires. He said that, on average, tires at his shop cost $60. That price includes the cost of mounting and balancing.

While the tires he sells are used, he said that he only sells Grade A tires—tires that still have at least 60 percent of their tread remaining. He sources the tires mainly from a southern company, with the tires coming from totaled cars whose tires are still in good shape.

Mr. Hendricks said that he has wanted to open a used tire store for a long time. He said that he had been driving to New Bedford for used tires for years on the advice of his godfather and felt that it was time to have something closer to home.

He said he was also frustrated with people being quoted high rates for tires, particularly when his girlfriend was quoted over $1,000 for the purchase and installation of four new tires. After driving to M&M Used & New Tires in New Bedford, he was able to buy her a full set of tires for $270.

Besides selling tires, Mr. Hendricks also buys tires from people who walk into the shop to sell them.

The tires are available in a range of sizes and represent a number of major brands such as Michelin, Pirelli, and Firestone.

He also sells and mounts new tires.

In addition to tires, he also provides mechanical services such as brake work, windshield wiper replacements, and undercoating.

Currently, Mr. Hendricks does the majority of the work at the shop on his own, with his brother helping out on weekends.

Canal Used Tire is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM.
