A man from Pocasset was arrested on the Fourth of July for allegedly driving drunk, his second such offense, police said.
Bourne Police Lieutenant Jonathan R. MacDougall said that officers arrested Brian Smith, 41, Thursday night, July 4, around 10 PM on Spinnaker Lane in Pocasset. Officers had been sent to the area on reports of a hit and run crash that damaged a 2013 Volkswagen Passat. The vehicle that caused the damage, a blue 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck was still traveling around the neighborhood, Lt. MacDougall said.
When officers arrived, they saw one of the license plates had fallen off Mr. Smith’s truck. Officers stopped Mr. Smith as he drove past them at the scene. Lt. MacDougall said that given the officers’ observations, and Mr. Smith’s failure to pass a field sobriety test, he was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor, second offense.
Lt. MacDougall said that Mr. Smith was also charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. He was arrested without incident, and was unable to pay the $40 administrative fee to be released on personal recognizance, Lt. MacDougall said.
Mr. Smith was held overnight and taken to Falmouth District Court for arraignment this morning, Friday, July 5, the lieutenant said.
