Bridge Design

The proposed design for the new Bourne Bridge would place it to the east, or inboard, of the current span.

The design for the bridges that will replace the current spans across the Cape Cod Canal is inching toward finalization. Project managers on the bridge replacement project this week presented concepts for road configurations leading to and from the new Bourne and Sagamore bridges.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation representatives addressed the Bourne Select Board during the board’s meeting on Tuesday, March 21. People associated with the replacement project provided a look at several possibilities for reconfiguring roads in and around the two bridges.

Why not build tunnels? The bridges are closed in high winds, which is an interesting challenge during a hurricane evacuation. Tunnels aren’t affected by wind or snow.
