Big Nick's Ride

Motorcyclists participating in Big Nick’s Ride For The Fallen rumble past a cheering crowd at Russell’s Corner in Sandwich Village.

Hundreds of motorcyclists gathered to ride in the 12th Annual Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen Sunday morning, July 18.

The fundraising ride began at 10 AM outside the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Complex, near the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, traveled all the way to Yarmouth.

Big Nick’s ride takes place every year on the third Sunday in July in honor of United States Marine Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos, 21, who was killed in action on July 23, 2009, in Afghanistan, when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb. Cpl. Xiarhos, who grew up in Yarmouth, is the namesake of the event and is one of 16 Cape Codders who are honored by the ride.

Money raised from the event is donated to a number of organizations including Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, food pantries in Yarmouth and Sandwich, the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation, Special Olympics Massachusetts, the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center, and the Friends of the Bourne Council on Aging.
