A tractor trailer caught fire and caused the shutdown of a portion of Route 6 near the Sagamore Bridge on Monday morning, October 26. The Bourne Fire Department reported that no one was hurt in the blaze.

Bourne Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Haden said firefighters from Buzzards Bay and Sagamore Beach responded to the scene at 4 AM. The truck ignited on the westbound side of the Mid-Cape Highway as the vehicle was approaching the Sagamore Bridge.

The truck was a refrigerated vehicle carrying food items, Deputy Chief Haden said. The truck was 50 percent engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, he said, but the fire did not extend into the cab. The driver was able to escape safely on his own.

Route 6 was closed between exits 2 and 1C for about an hour. Traffic was detoured off the highway at exit 2.

Bourne firefighters were assisted at the scene by Massachusetts State Police and Sandwich firefighters.
