Edward A. Maybury Sr., 81, of Melbourne, Florida, died May 21. He was a former resident of Sagamore Beach and had once been a musician with The Moonlighters, among other dance bands.

Originally from Springfield, he graduated from technical high school there in 1957. After being awarded a United Aircraft Scholarship to any school in the nation, he chose to stay close to home and attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where he earned a mathematics degree in 1961. He would further his education with master’s degree in engineering management from Northeastern University in 1973.

He and Stella Doris Karolin were married in 1962.

Following his military service as an aviation officer in the US Army, Mr. Maybury entered the civilian work force with technical and management roles at MITRE and Raytheon.

His subsequent commercial executive career included leadership positions as executive vice president of TMI (1977-1989), president and CEO of Data Architects Systems, Inc. (1989-1991), president and CEO at Creative Systems, Inc. (1991-1993) and executive vice president at Logica Data Architects, where he was first in the world to deploy complex software and artificial intelligence to automate large electronic wire transfers between global banks.

Mr. Maybury was a founding member and one of the longest serving members of the board of directors at Pegasystems (1983-2004), culminating his career as board emeritus.

He retired to Sagamore Beach and pursued his passions of playing saxophone and clarinet and composing, performing and recording music. Over the years Mr. Maybury was a founding member of the Chelmsford Community Band and member of Sandwich Town Band, Chatham Band, Cape Cod Concert Band, Cape Cod Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, as well as multiple dance bands including After Hours, Moonlighters and Silver Foxes.

He was a president of the North Sandwich Community Association and attended religious services locally at Corpus Christi Church in East Sandwich.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, he leaves three children, Dr. Edward Maybury Jr. of Melbourne, Florida, Dr. Mark Maybury of Chelmsford, and Dr. Karol Maybury of Farmington, Maine; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and other family.

A funeral service and memorial Mass will be said on Monday, June 21, at 11 AM at Corpus Christi Church in East Sandwich.
