Francis P. Donovan of Bourne, who was known as Frank, died September 1. He was 93.
He was the husband of Gloria Donovan for 47 years at the time of her death in 1999.
He was born in the Bronx, New York. Gifted intellectually, he skipped 3rd grade, later attended the prestigious Regis High School, and then accepted a full academic scholarship to Fordham University.
World War II interrupted his college career and Mr. Donovan entered the US Navy, serving his time on a destroyer as it went around the world. At the end of the war, he completed his degree, and was immediately offered a position with Metropolitan Life Insurance. He remained there for his entire career, working his way up to vice president, and retired after 40 years with the company.
It was at Met Life that he met the woman who would become his wife. The couple lived in New Jersey, then Long Island, and eventually settled in Gray Gables.
An avid golfer, he was a member of Pocasset Country Club; he also loved doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles.
He leaves two sons and two daughters, as well as extended family.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pocasset.
Private burial was at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
