John James Boyle, 79, of Bourne died March 27 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a period of declining health.
He was the husband of Jane (Garvey) Boyle, who died in 2009. They had shared 49 years of marriage.
The son of John and Eloise (Binnall) Boyle, he was raised in Newton.
After earning his bachelor’s degree at Boston College, he furthered his education at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating with a master’s degree and PhD in physics.
Mr. Boyle worked for Draper Laboratory in Cambridge for nearly 40 years, and continued as a consultant during his retirement.
For recreation he enjoyed golfing and traveling. He was an avid fan of Boston College football as well as the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
He leaves six children, Jane Perkoski of Plymouth, Nancy Luciani of Virginia, Maura Wheet of Framingham, Suzanne Sullivan of West Wareham, John J. Boyle Jr. of Milford and Meghan Irvine of New York; 17 grandchildren; and a large extended family.
He was predeceased by a sister, Frances Nugent.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, April 1, at St. Patrick Church in Natick.
Interment was in St. Patrick Cemetery.
