Mario Tonello, a longtime resident of Sagamore Beach, died January 6. He was 98.

He was the husband of Margaret K. (Boffetti) Tonello for 65 years. They married in 1951, 10 years after they met, and she died in 2016.

Mr. Tonello was born in Weymouth, one of 10 children of Joseph and Mary (Frola) Tonello. He was educated in Weymouth and Bourne schools, and went on to receive a bachelor of science degree from Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1972.

He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 on the USS Wainwright during World War II.

Shortly after returning from his military service, he began a career at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the marine engineering department. He also served as business manager of the athletic department and as director and a pioneer of the small boat division at the academy.

In the years following his retirement, Mr. Tonello stayed active in the community.

During the 1980s he had served as a member of the Upper Cape Cod Regional Vocational-Technical School District Committee.

He leaves two sons, John R. Tonello and his wife, Cheryl A. Tonello, and Jeffrey R. Tonello and his wife, Laura E. Tonello, all of Sagamore Beach; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday, January 11, at 5 PM at The New Testament Church, 1120 Long Pond Road in Plymouth.
