Robert Knight Taunton Sr., 80, of Sagamore died unexpectedly on May 13 at Tobey Hospital.

He was born in Norwood, one of the four children of Benjamin and Mildred Knight Taunton. He grew up in Hingham. As a young boy, he discovered his passion for sailing at the local yacht club, and would later teach the activity. He was graduated from Hingham High School in 1957.

Mr. Taunton joined the United States Army on January 4, 1960, and received training as a medical specialist. He was stationed in Germany and became a valued member of the rifle team. During his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon discharge from his military service, he moved to California and began working in medical supply sales. He worked for several companies and would advance in this career to training and management positions.

He lived in Colorado and Rhode Island before returning to Massachusetts.

Mr. Taunton continued his love for the ocean and of sailing throughout his life. He also enjoyed listening to music in his free time.

He leaves three daughters, Delina Betts, Dawn Taunton and Dianna White; a son, Robert K. Taunton Jr.; and two grandsons, George Betts and Nicholas Betts.

Burial will be at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
