Suzanne C. Collins of Pocasset, a longtime teacher and volunteer, died on March 3 following a brief illness. She was 82.
Raised in Flushing, New York, Ms. Collins earned a degree from Fordham University and went on to a career in teaching.
She served as an elected member of Milton's planning board, president of its League of Women Voters and a longtime volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
A leader in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Women's League, she was a senior teacher in their English Conversation Program and a member of the executive board.
Ms. Collins spent every summer of her life in Pocasset, where she had many lifelong friends and enjoyed her daily walks, bike rides and swims around Patuisset Island.
She leaves her husband of 60 years, Joseph Collins; children Jeanne Marie Borgese of Woods Hole, Joseph Collins and his wife, Susan, of Winter Park, Florida, Timothy Collins and his wife, Shoshy, of Manchester, Noël Collins and her husband, Dennis Todd, of Upton, and Jessica Collins and her husband, Larry Dixon, of South Hadley; and 17 grandchildren.
She also leaves siblings W. David Callagy of Chevy Chase, Maryland, R. Dennis Callagy of Fort Pierce, Florida, and Peter Callagy of Pocasset.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Callagy.
A wake will be held on Monday, March 6, from 4 to 7 PM at Chapman Funerals & Cremations in West Falmouth.
A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 7, at 10 AM at the same location.
