Thomas M. McClain, 69, of Buzzards Bay died September 19.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Roseann Howe and John McClain.

Most of his youth was spent in Brooklyn with his three brothers until he moved to Buzzards Bay in 1968 with his mother, two brothers and stepfather. He completed his schooling here, graduating from Bourne High School.

Mr. McClain began his working career as a roofer and doing jobs in construction. Then he joined the Bourne Water District and remained until he retired from the municipal position.

After retirement Mr. McClain worked as a consultant at a private nonprofit company helping elderly women to stay in their homes as long as possible.

An avid Zen mediator, Mr. McClain attended the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center’s annual volunteer work program for many years. He was also involved at a Zen mediation center near Provincetown. In addition, 17 years ago he started a meditation meeting in Bourne that will continue after his death.

He was known for his dedication and support of others in communities throughout Cape Cod. Since the 1980s he had volunteered for the AIDS community, providing comfort and assurance to people in their final moments.

Mr. McClain leaves his wife and stepson, as well as his remaining brother.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
