Eight hundred [and] seventy-six Massachusetts Maritime Academy student parking spaces both on and off campus in the village of Buzzards Bay. Wow!
Reading about the MMA buying land across from Bourne’s town hall for student parking caused me to recall lyrics from an old song, “Big Yellow Taxi”:
“Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot.”
Today, all colleges have student parking challenges. Many colleges have implemented a viable alternative to meet this need by going up, not out. Building a multi-story garage on campus protects Buzzards Bay residents and Bourne’s revitalization plan for Buzzards Bay.
Another alternative might be to have the town negotiate with the academy and “cap” the number of off-campus student parking spaces.
I don’t live in Buzzards Bay but looking at a recent map of the village that highlights the number of parking lots owned or leased by the MMA brings me to a simple conclusion. Revitalization of this village is definitely at risk. The town needs to stop supporting paving paradise.
