I am filled with sadness as once again there is a mass shooting, this time in El Paso, Texas. How many innocent Americans must be shot before our government leaders manage the ownership of firearms?

State government manages the ownership of automobiles using certificates of title, auto ID numbers and registration plates. None of this information prohibits a licensed driver, who passes a driver’s test, from owning a car and driving anywhere, anytime. I feel similar requirements and regulations could be put in place to monitor and control the ownership of firearms.

But most important, actively managing the ownership of firearms will not prohibit any American from exercising their rights under the Second Amendment.

As a Vietnam veteran who carried and slept with an assault weapon for 360 days, I fully support the banning of assault weapon ownership within the United States. The Fifth Commandment says it in words everyone can understand: “Thou shalt not kill.”
