The Wednesday evening QYC Race Committee was faced with their first evening without pro-in-training Molly Jones and decided to put Captain Jackson through his paces by dropping two temporary marks. With the wind blowing 5-8 knots from the southwest, this decision allowed the Race Committe of Annie Dean, Martha Adams, Ed Jackson, and Doug Jones to set an I2 course (windward/leeward twice around with the start and finish in the middle). Contrary to recent practice the starting line had a slight starboard favor, but the fleet approached the line a little too early and spread out along the entire line.

Weatherly Dorris and Charity Lee in Pani Baba approached the line on port and were forced to tack over onto starboard in front of the entire fleet. While they just missed being on the course side at the starting gun, contact with the starting pin forced them to round the mark again. Mort Saunders and Kristen Karplus in Found It had a nice start near the middle of the line while Mike Garfield in Phoenix started a few seconds late but the in preferred windward, boat end position.

At the windward mark the first time, Found It established a slim lead over Phoenix with Ali Rodin and Steve Chalmers in Sea Breeze, Chuck First and Bernie Levesque in Allie Rose, and Ted Grayson and Eric Eggleson in Swizzle in close pursuit. Sailing alone, Phoenix was unable to fly a spinnaker and also lost control of her jib sheet. While she struggled to hold her position, the fast flying Swizzle, Sea Breeze, and Allie Rose passed her by before rounding the leeward mark. On the second upwind leg, Found It held her slim lead, but Phoenix moved back into second place as she was able to find the best puffs and lifts. During the final run to the finish.

Found It took advantage of fine spinnaker work to hold off the charging Phoenix as they rounded up to the final short beat to the finish. While Found It worked hard to cover the fleet, Phoenix chose to sail to the lay line on port tack. When the two lead boats finally converged near the finish, Found It tacked just to leeward and a bit ahead of Phoenix. Phoenix was able to take advantage of her superior boat speed while Found It was completing her tack, and Phoenix grabbed windward position and coasted to a five second victory.
