BHS Boys' Lacrosse vs. Nauset - April 16, 2019

Bourne’s Jon Sheehy collides with a Nauset player during the Canalmen’s first meeting with the Warriors on April 16 at home.

The out-of-conference schedule hasn’t been pleasant for the Bourne boys’ lacrosse team this season.

The Canalmen traveled out to North Eastham to meet the Warriors on Tuesday, May 14, and fell just short of leaving with a win, dropping the non-conference meeting, 15-11. Bourne fell to 2-4 against non-South Coast Conference teams after opening the season 2-0.

Logan Hawkes led offensively for the road team, scoring four goals, while Christian Mulkern had three goals on the day.

The game played out awfully similar to when the Warriors visited Bourne on April 16, with both teams playing evenly matched until Nauset pulled away late for a 12-9 win.

Hawkes and Connor McGuire helped the Canalmen break a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, giving the visitors a 3-1 early advantage. Nauset was then able to tie the game at four and take a 5-4 lead with less than five minutes to play in the first half.

The Warriors carried a 7-5 lead into the break at halftime after connecting on five goals in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter. Bourne came out with more intensity in the third quarter to stay within striking distance, 10-7. In the fourth quarter the Canalmen scored to pull back within three goals, 12-9, with roughly six minutes left. Hawkes and Mulkern added goals over the final three minutes to close the gap to two goals, 13-11, but the Warriors added two insurance goals to hang on for the win.

After ousting Nauset from playoff contention during the regular season finale in 2017, Bourne has lost the last four meetings against the Warriors, dating back to last year.

The Canalmen now find their backs up against the wall to make a return visit to the Division 3 South Sectional playoffs. They host Dighton-Rehoboth to close out South Coast Conference play before ending the season on the road against Mashpee and Upper Cape Tech. Bourne has won all three previous meetings this season against those teams, combining to outscore its opponents 51-16.

Hull 16, Bourne 6

In the Canalmen’s annual test against the best Division 3 South has to offer, Bourne came up short against the Pirates in Hull on Monday, May 13.

Three players scored twice for Bourne as Hull doubled up on the Canalmen in the non-conference victory. Max Hess, Jon Sheehy and Hawkes provided the scoring for Bourne in the loss.

Goalie Chris Evangelista faced an onslaught of shots, stopping nearly 30 of them before the game was called prior to the start of the fourth quarter due to wet playing conditions.

Bourne (7-9, 3-3 SCC) travels to Mashpee on Monday, May 20, to meet the Falcons in a non-conference match at 3:45 PM. The Canalmen won the first meeting in Bourne, 21-8, on April 5.
