The offense exploded for the Bourne field hockey team after falling behind early against Fairhaven. They scored five unanswered goals to capture a 5-1 win at home against the Blue Devils on Wednesday, September 11.
Junior forward Julia Elicier netted a hat trick in the win with her first goal tying the game with six minutes left in the first half. Hannah Greene broke the 1-1 tie early in the second half. Elicier’s second of the game came off the stick from Aaysham Tahir. Her third and final goal came eight minutes later as the Canalmen fully grasped the lead and never relinquished it.
Emily Strojny had the other goal for Bourne, which received excellent play in the midfield from Sophie Stowe, JJ Rodrigues and Mary Schmitt.
Elizabeth Black made seven saves in net, but was well protected by her defense, led by Taylor McCarthy, Phoebe Medeiros, Serena Tura and Holly Miller.
Bourne 1, Apponequet 1
A season ago, it was the Apponequet Lakers who broke away from a close game with a victory. Last Friday, September 6, however, it was the Canalmen’s turn.
The Lakers held a 1-0 lead during Bourne’s South Coast Conference road opener until Greene changed all of that. With 59 seconds left to play, Greene sent home the game-tying goal to salvage a point and the tie with the SCC-Large school.
Apponequet took the 1-0 lead roughly 20 minutes into action, which held up until Greene came up with the equalizer. In a tough, defensive struggle of a game, head coach Mike Massmann credited the play of Stowe in the midfield and Elicier for providing offensive pressure throughout.
Bourne (2-0-1, 1-0-1 SCC) hosts Seekonk on Friday, September 13 at 3:30 PM as the Canalmen look to remain unbeaten on the season and in conference play.
