Bourne High School’s girls soccer team played last season, and because the South Shore Conference amended its season, the Lady Canalmen’s most recent season was this past spring. Falmouth Academy, on the other hand, did not compete in athletics as a whole last year, and the last time that the FA girls’ fielded a varsity girls’ soccer team was the fall of 2019.

Each team opened its 2021 season on Tuesday, September 7, at FA, and it was clear which team had had more time playing together as a unit. The Lady Canalmen received a strong all-around effort from its roster and won their game by a 4-0 score.

It took BHS a little bit to shake off Opening Day jitters, but once they did the Canalmen were on their way. Two goals midway through the opening half allowed the visitors to take control, and each of them was set up by Zoe Ridl. The first assist saw Ridl move the ball up the right side for a streaking McKinley Wenzel, who ran to the ball and scored off of a nice one-on-one move to get things going in the 21st minute. Six minutes later Ridl set up Lexy Morisset for a nice goal.

The score by Morisset should have put a nice bow on her homecoming. The senior, who won team MVP as a sophomore at BHS, played a year at St. John Paul II High School last year, but decided to come back to BHS for her final year of high school. After scoring the goal, though, Morisset went down with a knee injury and had to leave the game.

“We are hoping that it’s nothing big and not serious,” Coach Rui Correia said. “We are hoping for the best.”

The Mariners offense had a hard time making much happen. Julietta Marzot had a strong game for the home team, but she was unable to go through the Lady Canalmen defense, which focused on slowing her down. BHS goalie Emma Bourgault made three saves total in the game.

In the second half BHS put the game out of reach with two more goals. Paige Meda ran onto a pass from Devonia Lewis and split the defense to make it 3-0. Later, captain Emma Correira fired a great shot to the far post off a nice drop pass from Sam Gettings.
