Amid a season filled with changes, the Bourne volleyball team looked like the dominant team of old in spurts against SCC-Small rival Fairhaven.
Visiting the Blue Devils on Wednesday, October 9, the Canalmen—who are playing under interim coach Scott Ashworth, the school’s athletic director, for almost three weeks now—looked great strong, but the young team couldn’t secure the conference win on the road.
Though the boxscore reads as Fairhaven winning in a sweep, no set was easy against Bourne. The Blue Devils won 25-20, 26-24 and 27-25 to earn the season sweep against the Canalmen.
In the first set, Bourne turned a 17-10 deficit into a 21-19 deficit following a timely kill from senior captain Caitlin O’Connor. Fairhaven, however, scored four of the next five points to win the set. The Canalmen didn’t let a late surge from the hosts shake them, as they responded early in the second set to take a 6-1 advantage. Fairhaven tied the game at six apiece and the two traded jabs the rest of the way, as neither team led by more than three in the second set.
Much like the first set, Fairhaven led 17-10 in the final set before Bourne battled to eventually take a 25-24 lead. The Blue Devils, however, scored the next three points to score the set and the match.
O’Connor was key along the front line for the Canalmen, generating a team-high 15 kills while her sister, Kiely O’Connor, added six kills.
Bourne 3, Wareham 0
The Canalmen felt the familiar sensation of dominating an opponent on the road for three sets on Monday, October 7.
Facing the Vikings in Wareham, Bourne faced little resistance en route to a 3-0 win to the tune of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-23. Freshman Mary Berio-Rowlands recorded three aces to go with 10 assists for the Canalmen while junior Sophia Amaral dug up 18 balls as the team’s libero while freshman setter Kendall Fortune added eight assists.
In the win, the Canalmen earned the season sweep of the Vikings. Bourne swept Wareham, 3-0, on September 16.
Old Rochester 3, Bourne 1
Bourne fought hard in all four sets, but fell short of a conference crossover win against the Bulldogs in Mattapoisett on Friday, October 4.
The Canalmen took the third set to avoid a sweep, 25-20, but fell in the other sets 20-25, 18-25 and 19-25, respectively, in the loss. Michelle Gallerani, a senior captain, filled out the stat sheet with a three-ace, two-block and four-kill performance. Kiely O’Connor also put up big numbers in a few categories, finishing with three aces, 10 kills and 12 digs. Her older sister, Caitlin, also a captain, recorded 13 digs.
Berio-Rowlands had a double-double of 17 assists and 10 digs while Amaral finished with 15 digs.
Bourne (5-9, 3-4 SCC-Small) will host the Blue Raiders from Somerset-Berkley on Monday, October 14 at 6 PM.
