Bourne Volleyball vs Duxbury - October 21, 2019

The Bourne volleyball team has risen to the occasion in recent weeks, playing with more cohesion and competitiveness.

The Bourne volleyball team earned a season-defining road win against Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech on Wednesday, October 22.

Visiting the Bears in their second meeting of the regular season, the Canalmen battled admirably for a 3-2 match victory with the sets going 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-25 and 15-13 in favor of the visitors.

Junior captain Kiely O’Connor led the charge with a 14-dig and 10-kill game for the Canalmen while her older sister, senior captain Caitlin O’Connor, put forth a 12-dig, 10-kill performance.

Jillian Orth, the team’s starting setter, paced the offense by dishing out 22 assists while Sophia Amaral had a good game defensively with 22 digs as the team’s libero. Senior Michelle Gallerani filled out the stat sheet in the win, recording 15 digs and eight kills while serving up four aces.

It was a memorable win for the Canalmen considering they fell to the Bears in straight sets, 3-0, on September 18 in Bourne.

Duxbury 3, Bourne 0

Despite the three-set sweep, the Canalmen played with a more noticeable confidence in their home match with Duxbury on Monday, October 21.

Duxbury, a Division 2 team that plays in the Patriot League, won in straight sets, 26-24, 26-14 and 25-18.

Caitlin O’Connor racked up 15 kills, quite a few of them coming from the middle hitter position, while Orth put the offense at ease recording 18 assists. Amaral put forth a seven-dig, three-ace effort in the loss as the team’s defensive specialist.

Bourne 3, Ursuline Academy 0

Kiely O’Connor was on the service line for a 19-point run during the Canalmen’s second set victory and Bourne earned a three-set sweep against the Bears.

Hosting Ursuline Academy last Friday, October 18, Canalmen won in convincing fashion, 25-14, 25-7 and 25-23.

O’Connor had 12 aces to go with eight kills for Bourne while senior captain Caitlin O’Connor put up 11 kills in the win. Amaral had 10 digs and Orth added 21 assists.

Bourne 3, Apponequet 1

The Canalmen avenged a season-opening loss to the Lakers by handing the SCC-Large school a home loss of its own last Thursday, October 17.

Bourne jumped out to a 2-0 match lead, winning the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-18, respectively, before dropping the third set, 25-21. They bounced back in the fourth set to earn a match win en route to a 25-14 set win.

Caitlin and Kiely O’Connor combined for 24 kills while senior co-captain Gallerani put forth seven more kills. Orth had 19 assists from the setter position.

Bourne (9-11, 3-6 SCC-Small) hosts New Bedford on Friday, October 25, at 6 PM. The Whalers scored a 3-0 sweep at their place on September 13.
