Playing their third match in as many days, the Bourne High volleyball team powered past Seekonk High School in Bourne on Wednesday, September 22, winning in a clean sweep. The scores were lopsided in Bourne’s favor as the team overpowered their visitors 25-12, 25-5, and 25-14.
Bourne’s service game was on point as the team collected 30 service aces. Delaney Jensen led the way in that area, managing to score nearly half of those aces herself as she collected 14. Jensen also had 11 digs in the match.
Gianna Lowden had five aces, Kendall Fortune had our and Emma Undzis had six. Undzis also had five kills on 10 attempts. Emily Sullivan put away three of her four kill tries in the match.
Bourne improved to 5-1 overall with the win. The squad is 3-1 in the South Coast Conference.
The Lady Canalmen continued their rise up the South Coast Conference ranks with another strong showing against New Bedford High School on Tuesday, September 21. The Lady Canalmen were able to play all 18 of their varsity players in the match and pulled out a sweep of the Whalers.
BHS won the first set 25-8 and the second 25-13 before finishing off NB with a 25-21 third set. The team improved to 4-1 overall on the season with the lopsided win.
Senior co-captain Delaney Jensen helped to lead the way with an outstanding match from the service stripe. She doled out 14 service aces in the win. Mia DiPaolo had six digs in a strong defensive outing.
Another senior co-captain, Emma Undzis, had seven kills from the outside hitter spot. Middle hitter Gianna Lowden picked up five kills and fellow middle Grace Russell had four. Junior setter Vanessa Fleck had a nice run of five straight service points in the third set for the Lady Canalmen, which included a pair of aces. She also had three assists.
The night before things were a little more difficult against a challenging team from Fairhaven High School. Bourne had to overcome a poorly played third game to rally from behind to win in five sets, 24-26, 25-20, 8-25, 25-22, 15-11.
Coach Dave Moore said that his team was flat early on, played better in set number two, but then was “terrible” in the third set. After that things got better and the Bourne girls finished strongly to pull out the win.
Senior co-captain Emily Sullivan put away seven aces from the service line to help pace the win. Jensen also had seven service aces and picked up 24 digs from her libero spot. Sarah Sweeney, a junior defensive specialist, had seven aces as well.
Lowden had seven kills in the match. Elana Timo had seven kills and 12 assists from her setter spot. Kacie Manning played well on defense and helped the team to turn the momentum in their favor in the match.
