The Bourne baseball team scored two runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the damage done earlier in the game by Dighton-Rehoboth on Wednesday, May 22.

Dalton Woodside and Alex Sorenti-Burns, who reached base on a walk and an error, respectively, both scored in the top of the seventh inning to pull the Canalmen within three runs of the Falcons in North Dighton, but that’s as close as the visitors would get.

The Falcons went on to win, 6-3, at home.

Ben Smith, who got the start for Bourne, drove in Brendan Sullivan, who slapped a lead-off double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, drove in Sullivan with an RBI- roundout in the top of the third inning for the Canalmen’s first run of the game.

Later that inning, senior first baseman Jack Neil nearly clubbed his first home run of the season, but fell just short and settled for a double.

The Canalmen have lost five-straight games and six of their last seven.

Apponequet 15, Bourne 1

After playing the one-loss Lakers to a 2-0 game in Lakeville a week ago, the Canalmen couldn’t keep pace with Apponequet on Monday, May 20, at Coady Field.

The Lakers put up three runs in the top of the first inning and jumped for nine more in the fourth inning, never looking back en route to lopsided road win.

Bourne answered in the bottom half of the first inning, when Sorenti-Burns worked a bases-loaded walk to score Smith. James Cahoon got the start, but was chased after 1.2 innings pitched. Brady Fitzpatrick, a lefty, came on in relief and worked 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball before the Lakers’ hitters began to figure out the southpaw.

The Canalmen had a chance to cut into Apponequet’s lead in the bottom of the third, when Lakers’ starting pitcher Colin Fahey walked the bases loaded with one out. But Fahey worked out of the jam unscathed to keep the visitors’ lead at three, 4-1.

Fahey got the win for Apponequet, allowing one run while striking out 10. Sullivan pitched the final three innings for Bourne.

Bourne (7-10, 6-9 SCC) will host an opponent from the SCC-Large division in the annual South Coast Conference crossover game on todayFriday, May 24 at 3:45 PM at Coady Field.
