With two games left in the regular season, the Bourne girls’ lacrosse team control their own destiny to securing a place in the Division 3 South Sectional tournament.
Hosting cross-rotary rival Upper Cape Tech on Wednesday, May 22, the Canalmen featured 13 goal-scorers en route to a 19-0 rout of the Rams. In the win, Bourne swept the season series with UCT after scoring an 18-0 win to open the season on April 1.
In two games against the Rams, the Canalmen have outscored their in-town rival, 27-0.
Taylor McCarthy recorded six points in the win, tallying three goals and three assists. Jillian Orth, Gwen Hallam, Rebecca Wilson and Kiely O’Connor (two assists) all had two goals for Bourne. Aaysham Tahir (two assists), Mya Cohen (one assist), JJ Rodrigues and Isabel Stone also scored.
Goalie Bri Becker recorded three saves in the shutout win.
Bourne 11, Mashpee 5
Two players combined to outscore the Falcons as the Bourne girls’ lacrosse team continued its push for the playoffs.
Hosting Mashpee on Monday, May 20 in a non-conference showdown, the Canalmen were led by Amanda Orciuch’s four goals and Caitlin O’Connor’s hat trick en route to a 11-5 victory.
Other goal scorers included Stone (two), Abby Ariagno (one goal, one assist) and Kiely O’Connor (one goal, two assists). The midfield trio of Ariagno and both O’Connor sisters regularly controlled the pacing and possession of the game, winning 11 of the 17 draws in the game.
Head coach Mike Massmann noted the strong play of goalie Becker, who made 11 saves, many of which came at critical points of the game.
“It was Bri’s best game of the season,” Massmann said.
Typically a back-and-forth, hard-fought game whenever these two teams meet up, Bourne earned the season sweep of the Falcons after previously defeating Mashpee, 8-6, on April 5 on the road.
Nauset 14, Bourne 8
The Canalmen held an early first-half lead, but the visiting Warriors chipped away and held on for the non-league win on Friday, May 17.
Bourne scored the first two goals of the game before Ariagno was called for a questionable dangerous shot penalty, forcing the captain to the sidelines for two minutes. Nauset took advantage of the penalty to take a 3-2 lead before Ariagno came out of the box and quickly scored from close range.
Ariagno finished the game with a hat trick while fellow midfielder Kiely O’Connor notched two goals and two assists. Orciuch finished the game with a goal and two assists.
Bourne 18, Dighton-Rehoboth 4
Ten Canalmen scored in a much-needed South Coast Conference road win last Thursday, May 16.
Sara Sullivan and Orciuch led the charge offensively, each recording three goals and two assists. McCarthy, Erin Reilly, Stone, Kiely O’Connor and Ariagno all had two goals for Bourne.
Emily Sullivan played the first half in net for the Canalmen, stopped seven shots, before giving way to Bri Becker, who stopped four second-half shots.
