At this time of year, Steve Cishek is typically stretching out his arm, beginning to ramp his velocity back up and starting the grind required to prepare his body for 162 games of Major League Baseball life as a relief pitcher. Rather than working downhill on a mound at Cressey Sports Performance this past week, he was pushing his daughters down the hills at Cape Cod Country Club, enjoying an early-season snowfall while visiting his family for Christmas.

There will be a lot more family fun this winter than in years past. After 12 years in the big leagues, spanning stays with eight MLB franchises, the 35-year-old from East Falmouth has decided to call it a career and announce his retirement.
