It was the second time in as many games the Bourne boys’ hockey team fell to a South Coast Conference opponent by a score of 3-2 at the Driscoll Arena in Fall River.
Visiting Somerset-Berkley on Wednesday, January 8, the Canalmen held an early first-period lead, but fell behind on their way to a 3-2 loss to the Blue Raiders.
Forward-turned-defenseman Connor McGuire, a senior, didn’t forget his naturally ability at scoring the puck since making the switch to the blue line, as he scored both Bourne goals on the night. He opened the scoring in the first period, staking the Canalmen to a 1-0 lead after finishing off a pass from senior Karsten Becker.
But, just like their 3-2 loss to Apponequet/Bishop Connolly over the weekend, a faulty second period doomed the visitors. Somerset-Berkley scored twice following the first intermission to take the lead, 2-1. The Blue Raiders made the game 3-1 one when connecting on a power play goal in the third period.
McGuire’s second goal of the game pulled the Canalmen back within a goal, 3-2, with 3:38 left to play, but Bourne couldn’t record the game-tying goal before time expired.
It was the eighth win in nine games for the Blue Raiders to begin the season.
Apponequet/Bishop Connolly 3, Bourne 2
A backbreaking second period handed the Bourne boys’ hockey team a South Coast Conference road game last Saturday, January 4.
The Lakers erupted for three goals following a scoreless first period and goals from junior Alex Duval and Becker weren’t enough to score the road win at Driscoll Arena in Fall River. Duval’s goal came in the high-scoring second frame, assisted by Owen Lapworth, who pulled the Canalmen within a goal, 2-1. Becker’s goal closed Bourne within a goal once again, 3-2, late in the third period. Senior Andrew Ariagno assisted on that goal.
Bourne (2-5, 1-3 SCC) returns to Gallo Ice Arena tomorrowon Saturday, January 11, when the Canalmen host ORR/Fairhaven in a South Coast Conference meeting at 7 PM.
