Mashpee’s golf team continued its great season on Wednesday, September 25. The Falcons traveled to Cohasset Country Club to take on the Skippers on their home course and scored a 124-117 win, moving to 8-1 overall on the season.
Mashpee’s top three all scored rounds under 40, led for the second day in a row by senior Kyle Puchol. The Falcons’ number two in the lineup fired an even-par 36, and won his match 7-2. He also garnered 27 Stableford points for the team.
Top player Colin Spencer, and No. 3, Jack Spencer, each scored rounds of 39. Colin halved his match and won 24 Stableford points. Jack won his match 6-3 and also had 24 points.
Casey Fitzgerald shot a 51 and lost his match by one, 5-4. He earned 12 points. Jack Howard had a 54 and lost his match 5.5-3.5, scoring nine Stableford points. Ross Smith shot a strong 44 for MHS and won his match 5.5-3.5. He picked up 12 points.
A day earlier, two of Cape Cod’s stronger golf programs squared off at The Brookside Club on Tuesday, September 24, with the visiting Mashpee High School team edging the home team from Bourne High in a close one, 119-104.
Senior Kyle Puchol led the charge for the Falcons by shooting even par over the nine holes out of the second spot for the Falcons. Puchol carded a round of 35 and won his match against Bourne’s Jared Baptist 6.5-2-5. In Stableford scoring he won the match 38-13, which gave his team a big cushion to work with.
The No. 1 golfers on each team put forth strong rounds. Mashpee’s Colin Spencer held back Mya Murphy in a fun match, 39-44. Spencer won the match play portion 6-3 and edged Murphy 29-21 in points.
The third spot was the most competitive match of the day. Bourne’s Jake Lunedei and Mashpee’s Jack Spencer each scored roudns of 45, with Spencer edging Lunedei 5-4 in match play. It was just as close in Stableford scoring, with Spencer getting 19 points to Lunedei’s 18.
Kam Sassone got a big win for the Canalmen at the four spot as he fired a 47 to Jack Howard’s 56. Sassone won 7-2 in match play and 17-6 in Stableford.
Casey Fitzgerald, of Mashpee, and Ben Halunen, of Bourne, had a fun match in the five hole. Fitzgerald edged his opponent by one shot in stroke play, 49-50, and took the match play portion, 5-4. In Stableford they drew even, with each boy carding 14 points to their team’s cause.
Nick Petrillo won big in the sixth spot against Mashpee’s Ross Smith, taking it 45-59 in stroke play. Petrillo won the match play portion by an 8-1 score and had a 19-3 edge in Stableford scoring for the Canalmen.
Collen Dunn of BHS and Brandon Anderson of MHS played a right one at the seventh spot. Dunn won 52-53 in stroke play and they halved their match. Dunn also prevailed in Stableford, 13-10.
Rounding things out in the eighth hole, Owen Surrette, for Bourne, won by two shots over Mashpee’s Nick Lopes, 57-59. Surrette won 5.5-3.5 in match play and 6-3 in Stableford.
The top six for each team counted toward the final score. Mashpee improved to 7-1 on the year, the Canalmen are now 4-4.
