It wasn’t the usual style of play that’s typically occurred when the Bourne boys’ lacrosse team met in-town rival UCT, but the result was the same.
The Canalmen built a five-goal lead after the first quarter and ended the regular season by scoring a 15-1 road win against the Rams on Wednesday, May 22. It’s the second-straight season that Bourne has bested its cross-rotary rival in both regular season meetings. Bourne opened the season with a 15-2 home win on April 1.
Over the years the game has brought about some chippy play as the two teams battled for town supremacy. But in the latest installment of the young rivalry, the game featured a much more lighthearted feeling as both teams played in its final regular season game. There was a stretch in the second quarter where both sides slung the ball cross-field on consecutive possessions, causing one head coach to tell to his players, “What are we doing out here?” Late in the game, with the Canalmen holding possession and a 10-plus goal advantage, Bourne defenders joined the UCT goalie in a brief game of tic-tac-toe in the dirt around the Rams’ goal.
Despite the lack of competitiveness, it was the third-straight win for the Canalmen.
