The Post 188 junior legion team continued its assault on Zone 10 with another lopsided victory on Tuesday, July 9. Traveling to Veteran’s Park in Chatham, the Upper Cape squad pounded out a 16-1 win against Orleans to stay undefeated for the season. The easy win moved 188 to 13-0 on the season as they prepared for two big games to close out the regular season against last year’s champions from Wareham.
The victory marked the 10th time in the club’s perfect 13-0 start in which it has allowed one or fewer runs in a game. For the season the team’s pitchers have given up just 22 runs overall, with 10 of those coming in a slugfest against Hingham that they won 18-10.
Offensively the team has been just as good. In the win they crested at least 10 runs in a game for the seventh time this year. Overall, 188 has plated 140 total runs for the year and is averaging 10.77 runs per game.
Leadoff man Jonny Nunes kept up his great season at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and four RBI. Max McDonald had a pair of hits in the two spot and Jared Barr had two hits and reached on an error from the cleanup spot.
Post 188 put it away early. The team scored three runs and left the bases juiced in the first. Sam Cavossa, Barr and Nico Gagnon all drove home runs during the rally. In the second McDonald drove in Nunes to make it 4-0. Then, in the third, they sent 11 men to the plate and scored six times to break it wide open. Gagnon, Colton Colleran, Blake Martin, Jonah Schlezinger, Brady Campbell, and Nunes all reached in succession during the big inning and Cavoss and Barr brought runs home as well.
Ten different players had base hits for 188 in the game. Martin made the start and pitched well for 188 with two hitless frames. Sean Landry and Cam Bush finished things off in relief. Finn Lewis and Matt Prete had nice defensive games.
