Scoring runs has not been a problem for the Sandwich Post 188 junior team this season. The undefeated local squad brought out its bats again on Saturday, June 15, as it put a hurting on visiting Duxbury in an 18-10 slugfest.
Their wins over the weekend improved Post 188’s overall record to 6-0. The team is averaging just over 11 runs per game.
Willie Baker and Johnny Nunes each had four hits and Sam Cavossa, Jonah Schlezinger and Zack Landry had two apiece in the high-scoring affair. Post 188 entered the bottom of the sixth with the contest trailing by two, 10-8. Needing two to tie it up they went crazy and sent 14 batters to the plate, scoring 10 times to blow the game open and win going away.
Baker kicked off the big inning for the juniors with a single and then came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Nico Gagnon. A walk to Jonah Schlezinger got the train rolling again and then Landry and Blake Martin each singled. A hit from Liam Finn tied the game and then Nunes drove home a couple with a single, making it 12-10. After a walk to Max McDonald, Cavossa had a run-scoring hit. Baker came up again and drove home a couple with a double and then Gagnon cleared the bases with a triple.
The game was a seesaw of run-scoring. Post 188 led 3-0 after one, but trailed 5-4 after two. The home team got the lead back, 7-5, with three in the third, but after four Duxbury was up 9-8. Duxbury pushed that lead to two in the top of the sixth before the huge bottom half of the frame by 188.
The day before, things went a lot easier for Post 188 in an 11-1 win against Barnstable Post 206’s junior team.
Martin retired the first nine men that he faced in the game and went four innings overall, allowing one run and one hit.
The game was close through the first few innings. McDonald and Cavossa scored runs in the first inning to put Sandwich ahead and Nunes singled and came around on a sacrifice fly from McDonald to make it 3-0 in the third.
Barnstable got one back in the top of the fourth, but then Sandwich erupted for four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Baker led off the big inning by launching a home run. Schlezinger and Cam Bush both had big RBI hits in that frame, with Bush connecting for a triple. Colton Colleran brought in a run with an RBI groundout and Martin doubled and later scored on a hit by Nunes.
Nunes also drove home a pair in the fifth inning as he went 3-for-4 in the win. Cavossa had a couple of hits in the win as well.
Post 188’s junior team (7-0, 14 points) travels to meet Hanover Post 149 (3-2, 6 points) on Friday, June 21 at 5:45 PM.
