UCT’s home game against Carver/Sacred Heart had senior Andrew Brightman’s fingerprints all over it.
He caught the game’s first touchdown, added a rushing score when he filled in at quarterback and controlled the offense, caught a two-point conversion and picked off a pass on defense as the Rams’ dominated the Crusaders, 22-6, on Saturday, October 5.
Typically a tough out, coming from the South Shore League-Tobin Division, Carver/Sacred Heart struggled finding yards on offense against a strong UCT defensive unit playing at home. The Rams came up with four sacks—1.5 by Joey Coelho, two by Shawn DiCarlo—and three interceptions by Brightman, Kemrin Glover and Juzary Salim.
UCT took an 8-0 lead early in the second quarter when junior quarterback Thomas Zine found Brightman for a 24-yard touchdown along the left sideline. Zine found Jon Brightman in the far right corner of the end zone on the ensuing two-point conversion.
Three drives later, following a Brightman interception that was returned down to the eight-yard line, Salim scored his only touchdown on the day to take 14-0 lead. Zine’s pass to Brightman on the two-point conversion good, as the Rams carried a 16-0 lead into the break at halftime.
Salim rushed for 97 yards and a score as he was able to push the pile and keep the chains moving. Glover, however, had a tougher go of it, as the Crusaders showed they could match his speed at getting to the edge. The senior captain finished with 13 yards on 10 touches.
On the on the seventh play of Rams’ first drive of the second half, Zine was injured on a play that was flagged for roughing the passer. Brightman took over the offense and in two plays gained 29 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown rush that gave the hosts a 22-0 lead. Carver took the ensuing kickoff and put together its best drive of the afternoon, capping a 10-play, 69-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass that was nearly intercepted by Glover in the end zone.
Glover came up with his interception later in the fourth quarter on a tipped pass before Salim iced the game with a pick of his own.
NUMBER TO KNOW: 38.4 — The percentage of Carver’s third-down conversion rate against the stout Rams’ defense. Carver went 0-for-6 in the first half on third downs before finding some success in the second at extending drives. In total the Crusaders went 5-for-13 on third downs for the game.
KEY PLAY: Already up 8-0 late in the first half, Andrew Brightman picked off a Carver deep ball and returned it down to the eight-yard line. One play later, Juzary Salim sliced his way through the Crusaders’ defense for the score to put UCT up 16-0 with 1:52 left in the first half.
ENTERPRISE SPORTS PLAYER OF THE GAME: SR Andrew Brightman, WR, UCT — The senior did a bit of everything on Saturday. He caught the game’s first touchdown, added a two-point catch on the second touchdown, rushed for the Rams’ only score of the second half and picked off a pass on defense. He also filled in at quarterback when Thomas Zine was sidelined with a minor injury.
UP NEXT: UCT (3-1) travels to meet Blue Hills (3-1) on Friday, October 11, at 6 PM. The Warriors are coming off a 16-8 road loss to Old Colony last week. They have wins against Hull, Cape Tech and Diman to open the season. Last year, the Rams scored a 41-0 shutout win against Blue Hills in Bourne. Carver/Sacred Heart (1-3) hits the road to meet Abington (2-3) in a South Shore League-Tobin showdown on Friday, October 11, at 7 PM. The Green Wave had a huge road win against Mashpee, 24-6, last week.
